welcome!

Project Galle 2006 (PG06) is a registered Trust that was established on 28 November 2005. The organization was borne out of the desire to build upon the extraordinary success of its predecessor, Project Galle 2005 (PG05). The five trustees of the new organization are all former volunteers with PG05.

One of the success stories of PG05 was its caliber of volunteers. Their work ethos and enthusiasm contributed enormously to the reputation that PG05 enjoyed within the Galle community. PG06 continues to seek hardworking, good hearted individuals who are committed to the continuing needs of the tsunami affected people of the Galle District.

PG06 is committed to delivering reconstruction and development projects, creating sustainable and lasting regeneration among the communities within the Galle District. Some of these projects are continuing work from last year, others are newly created.

Among the projects currently running are permanent housing, and onsite work to improve conditions within the internally displaced peoples (IDP) camps. This includes a rather unique scheme to encourage occupants in the camps to create their own portable gardens, termed 'grow bags'. Other projects include movie nights which are held in the IDP camps, sports field renovation and football coaching clinics, IDP photo restoration and community development within Galle town, such as a children's play area on the tsunami affected grounds of the Municipal Council, and the continued upgrade of the Green Market and its surrounding area.

PG06 is comprised of individuals with varied skills who are all working for the same goals. They are supported by a staff of locally employed Sri Lankans, a combination which provides for a cohesive, motivated and effective aid group that is making a difference to the lives of people.

Because of our commitment to the original philosophy of PG05 and our ability to ensure its legacy, we have enjoyed financial support from organizations such as; Save the Children in Sri Lanka (SCiSL), Friends of Unawatuna (a suburb community of Galle severely damaged by the waves), Guernsey Tsunami Reconstruction Project, the Oval Cricket Relief Trust, Friends of Galle Project (FrOG) and UK Sport amongst others. Our donor page gives proper recognition to all of the individuals and organizations that have given so generously.
