The devastation of the
Tsunami destroyed lives, homes and livelihoods across Sri
Lanka. According to government estimates, 4,250 were killed
and more than 134,000 were displaced in Galle District as a
result of the devastating waves. In the aftermath, an
immediate reaction was to help those in need. Efforts were
made by individuals trying in their own way to stem the
overwhelming pain and tragedy surrounding them.
Our core group of founders individually rescued victims from
rubble and provided medical aid, food, clean water and other
necessary provisions, but realised that a unification of
efforts would achieve more.
So, under the auspice of the British High Commission in Sri
Lanka, and with the realisation that aid was needed
immediately on a massive scale, an open meeting was called
in Fort, Galle resulting in a collective decision to unify
the individual efforts being made. On the morning of 31st of
December Project Galle 2005 was conceived, and by evening a
coordinating office, warehouse, vehicles and volunteer
accommodation had been offered and put into use. On the same
day our first deliveries were made to IDP camps (Internally
Displaced People.)
All of us have volunteered our time and resources.
Knowing where to start was the hardest step, but the only
way to rebuild the Galle, Sri Lanka community is to carry on
taking steps, no matter how small, no matter how long the
journey.
