Coir Machine Project

The Coir Machine Project is now complete. Our program began in March with coordinators Logan Gee and Faizal Roshan Sanjeewa. Distribution began in April with a handful of people from Rathgama. 1,000 machines have now been given out and the project has come to a successful close.

The greatest difficulties with the project had been in communication and information sharing. Due to the fact that spinning rope from coir was largely an unregistered household industry, there is very little information available as to exactly how many people had spinning wheels before Black Boxing Day.

Initially, it was quite a challenge for the carpenters as well, as they are not used to orders of such immense quantity. They have taken on contracted laborers, thus through our donations we have been able to fund livelihoods via the coir industry and through labor assistance.

Athula Tilakarathna, who is our carpenter in Boossa, greatly appreciates the help of Project Galle 2005 and its donors. Losing his house and workshop in the tsunami, he has been able to fund a temporary small business that will get him back on his feet again.

A very big thanks to all involved, and to our program sponsors.
