At the end of July two volunteers (Harriet Cullum and Hannah Walkin) came over from the small English town of Bourne, Lincs. to lend a helping hand to Project Galle. Before leaving England they started collecting donations from their local community, a fiver here and a tenner there. By the time they left for Sri Lanka they had accumulated 700 pounds. 300 went to a project to supply needy Sri Lankans with chairs and tables at the IDP (Internally Displaced People) camp in Ahungalla. The remaining 400 pounds went to the Montessori School mentioned in last month’s newsletter.
During the local school holidays, with the help of a number of Brighton College students and our four non-blonds, this tsunami affected school was transformed into a bright and cheerful place of learning for 25 underprivileged infants. The big NGOs sometimes overlook the smaller projects, but with your help, either financial or physical, Project Galle can try and reach some of those that would otherwise fall through the cracks.
