Since its inception, PG05 field teams have been on the ground identifying camps, questioning camp coordinators, assessing their needs, and creating a detailed database of information. In the immediate aftermath of the tsunami, volunteers made frequent visits to camps to deliver food, hygiene products, and other less-frequently available items such as clothing, school supplies and sporting goods.
As the government food distribution program began to satisfy basic nutritional needs, we gradually discontinued our food deliveries. In recent times we have focused on obtaining more detailed information regarding the demographics and conditions of camps and villages. PG05 field volunteers and staff, for example, investigate camps to determine whether they have electricity, adequate drainage and sanitation, and sufficient water supplies. Where problems are identified, we attempt to follow-up by contacting agencies who provide these services.
We have identified and served as many as 96 camps during our time in the field and are currently visiting about 60 camps. We have recently expanded our operational boundaries, and have now assessed camp needs and conditions from Balapatiya to Matara, a distance of about 80 kilometers.
PG05 has consistently stressed the need to maintain an active presence in the field. In this way we are able to provide accurate information to donors so they can determine the needs of the tsunami-affected people in our service area. In addition, we cooperate with governmental and non-governmental organizations who have requested the field information that we have gathered. In this way, PG05 has become a recognised source for accurate field information in Galle District and beyond.
