Food distribution
One of the most urgent needs of the displaced people in
December was a regular supply of food.
Initially basic foodstuffs and supplementary foods for
children were sourced in Colombo, and trucked down to our
Galle warehouse for distribution to the IDP camps.
After
about 2 weeks, all foodstuffs were sourced locally. In
the period from January to mid March, food was supplied
to up to 70 camps weekly.
Bottled water was supplied to camps where necessary for
January and part of February, until safe drinking water
was established in the camps
The foodstuffs were transported in a fleet of minivans,
along with baby products, toys, sanitary supplies,
mosquito coils, candles and the like.
By the end of March, the government’s general food
distribution program was in full swing. In conjunction
with the World Food Programme, the government provided
rice, dahl, sugar, flour, and cooking oil to
tsunami-affected persons throughout our region.
Below is a typical week’s distribution taken from our
figures in March.
