Prototype Grow Bag

Grow Bags: Homegrown Nutrition for IDP Camps.

The primary objective is to provide a source of readily available dietary sustenance to families still living in temporary housing. For many individuals in IDP Camps (Internally Displaced Peoples) the tsunami destroyed curative and nutritional plants they were accustomed to producing. Without these basic plants families lack essential daily sources of vitamins, minerals and medicinal remedies, thus leaving them susceptible to malnutrition and illness. By using 3ft transferable grow bags; it enables a variety of favoured vegetables and spices to be grown, offering a stable source of fresh foods.

As well as their easy relocation to their permanent houses for continued and sustainable production. The bag itself is made from polyurethane, it has holes strategically cut into the sides, which allow and give room for the plants to flourish The project endeavors to instill a sense of empowerment to these displaced persons, providing an opportunity to create and maintain a means of supplemental nutrition to their diets, which can be beneficial as well as educational for adults and children.

The initial funding to assess the project's feasibility was kindly subsidized by Francis Thompson and Isabel Sheppard on behalf of the people of Goring and Streatly-on-Thames, England. Without such support it would be impossible to orchestrate a much needed and invaluable project. On behalf of Project Galle 2006, many thanks to Francis Thompson and Isabel Sheppard for their kindness and generosity.
