Family Photo Restoration Project
Thematic Area:
The fundamental purpose of the project is to restore existing photographs of people lost in the tsunami. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, the project aims to help families on an emotional and social level. Many families who lost family members in the tsunami are still grieving. To provide a family with a restored photograph of a lost family member would aid the grieving process and give the relative something of lasting substance to remember their loved one by. The record of a lost family member is invaluable to the development of the surviving family.
Duration:
Over the course of two months (February – March 2006), IDP camps will be visited, informing members of our project, determining whether photos will be well received and deciding whether taking photos and reconstructing them is appropriate. Once the photo’s have been scanned and edited on a computer, they will be printed, laminated and framed for distribution to the appropriate families, along with the original photo. The “new” photos will be 8” x 10” in size.
After the success of the first family portrait project in which 4500 family
Portraits were taken and distributed to thousands of IDP’s in the Galle district,
PG06 has received funding from friends of Unawatuna for another 4000 portraits to be taken.
The second stage started in early January and has been another resounding success.
Again, like last year, the families and individuals in the IDP shelters come out in their droves to have their portraits taken. The atmosphere is always great, with new and experienced volunteers constantly being surprised by the positive reaction of the IDP’s.
This project will draw to a close by the end of February , at that point PG05/6 will have taken and distributed 8500 framed portraits. That will be it for the portrait project in Galle but the next project ,Photo restoration will start at the beginning of March.
Funded by Friends of Unawatuna the restoration project is a unique project to PG06
We aim to restore 960 tsunami damaged photos for the people in IDP shelters in the
Galle district. So far we’ve collected over 600 photos, some of which are very badly damaged and will be a challenge to restore.
We are excited about this new project and will keep you up to date with how things are
Going.
